Atletico Madrid vs Celta Vigo 22/09/19

22 September 2019

After playing out a 2-2 home draw with Juventus in the Champions League opener, Atletico Madrid return to La Liga (LL) action this weekend, as they take on Celta Vigo at the Estadio Wanda Metropolitano.

Atletico’s 100% start has been brought to a halt with Real Sociedad securing a 2-0 home win over Los Rojiblancos last time out (W3, L1). All three of Los Colchoneros’ LL triumphs have seen them beat their rivals by a narrow one-goal margin, with two of those wins ending with the identical 1-0 scoreline. The hosts have problems finding the net in the first half this term, having scored just two of a total of seven goals in all competitions before the halftime whistle. Nonetheless, they are big favorites to win here, especially as Celta’s last league win in Madrid dates back to 2007. Atletico have won six of the previous seven H2Hs here (W6, D1), four consecutive ahead of this fixture.

Meanwhile, the visitors are not enjoying the best of starts having won just one of four LL games so far (W1, D1, L2). Aside from a 1-0 home triumph over Valencia, the Célticos have struggled to keep a clean sheet in the remaining three league games, allowing over 1.5 match goals in both of their LL defeats this term. Fran Escribá will have to find a way to solve Celta’s immense problems when away from home, as they’ve failed to pick up a single win in 12 LL trips since the turn of the year (D5, L7). While seven of those defeats saw Celta struggle to find the back of the net, six have witnessed them concede at least two goals.
