A Bundesliga derby clash between Wolfsburg and Bayer Leverkusen that will take place at the Volkswagen Arena will see the two sides going after the same goal – European promotion.
While Wolfsburg chase the top four, Bayer Leverkusen are desperate to close the gap on the Europa League zone following a disastrous start of the campaign.
Last weekend’s 2-1 away defeat to Schalke has brought Wolfsburg’s six-game unbeaten Bundesliga run to an end (W5, D1), and it was also the first time Bruno Labbadia’s men have scored under 1.5 goals per match after five successive outings. However, the Wolves are unbeaten in their last three home clashes (W2, D1), having managed two clean sheets in the process. Still, Wolfsburg’s record of one win in six home clashes with the teams from the upper half of the table (W1, D3, L2) is something that should worry Labbadia. Another thing that concerns Wolfsburg boss is that his players failed to keep a clean sheet in seven of nine Bundesliga home meetings, allowing over 1.5 goals per match five times along the way.
On the other hand, the visitors’ ups and downs have made them one of the most unpredictable teams in the German top tier. The Company XI were unable to record two straight Bundesliga wins since the start of the season, and they come into this encounter following a 1-0 home loss to Borussia Monchengladbach. Leverkusen’s indifferent road form (W3, D2, L4) can be a major influence here, especially considering their oscillations on the last five Bundesliga road trips (W2, D1, L2). During that period, Peter Bosz’s men have failed to keep a clean sheet but have hit the net in four games, scoring over 1.5 goals per match twice in the process.
