The two struggling Bundesliga (BL) sides will lock horns at the Stadion An der Alten Försterei this weekend, as Union Berlin face Schalke 04.
The hosts have failed to land a victory in four post-pandemic league fixtures (D1, L3), extending their winless BL run to six (D2, L4). Each of their four defeats during that six-game sequence has yielded at least a two-goal margin and witnessed Union Berlin draw a blank in the first half of play. Furthermore, ‘Die Eisernen’ have failed to pick up a win in four consecutive BL home matches (D2, L2), conceding over 1.5 goals on three of those occasions. Keeping a clean sheet will be vital for Union Berlin, as five of their six top-flight home triumphs this term saw them shut out the opposing side. However, if they concede the opening goal, as they did in six of 14 BL home games so far, Urs Fischer’s men could find themselves in trouble – Union Berlin won just a single point when they shipped the opener at this venue (D1, L5).
As for the visitors, their disastrous form from the beginning of this calendar year has continued after the coronavirus pandemic, as they enter this round on a run of 11 consecutive league games without a win (D4, L7). Frustratingly for the traveling fans, ‘Die Königsblauen’ have drawn a blank in all but three of those 11 matches, scoring only one goal in six BL road trips since the turn of the year, too. Away from home, David Wagner’s players have failed to post a single win in eight successive outings (D3, L5), conceding over 1.5 goals in five, including the last three.
