Allianz Arena is the venue as German fifth-tier outfit Düren Merzenich take on reigning Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich in the first round of the DFB Pokal.
Currently competing in the Oberliga Mittelrhein, Duren have started the new season with a bang, putting together three wins, all of which saw them open the scoring and keep a second-half clean sheet. Curiously, just one of their ten outings this calendar year has ended in a draw (W4, D1, L5), friendlies included. The majority (77.78%) of those results (wins/losses) have come via at least a two-goal margin, with five seeing the winner on the day shut out the loser. Also, going back to October 2019, none of Duren’s ten games as hosts has ended level (W7, L3), eight of which have featured a full-time margin greater than one goal.
Meanwhile, the visitors have been quite an exciting team to watch this season, especially in domestic competitions. Indeed, each of their four domestic fixtures has produced over 4.5 goals, with the last three seeing both teams on the scoresheet too (W3, L1). Quick out of the blocks, the ‘Bavarians’ have opened the scoring in the first half in three of those four matches, adding at least one goal beyond the 80-minute mark. Moreover, Hansi Flick’s men were ruthless in the DFB Pokal back in 2019/20, scoring an average of 2.66 per game en route to lifting the trophy. Interestingly, though, Bayern only managed one clean sheet in six games in the competition last season.
