Southampton will be hoping to extend their winning Premier League run to three games when they lock horns with Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.
The hosts have accrued two wins, a draw, and a loss from their opening four Premier League outings, with each of those three results (wins/loss) yielding a multiple-goal margin. Also, except for a 2-0 home defeat to Liverpool on Matchday 2, the ‘Blues’ have netted over 2.5 goals in the remaining three league fixtures this term, registering the vast majority (90%) of the league goals scored in the second half of play (9/10). Yet, Chelsea may want to step up their defensive game in the opening hour of play, as all six of their Premier League goals conceded so far arrived before the 55-minute mark. By contrast, Frank Lampard’s men have shut out Southampton in three of their last four competitive H2Hs as hosts (W2, D1, L1).
Meanwhile, the visitors seem to have managed to overcome a slow start to the season, going from two consecutive Premier League losses to back-to-back wins. Curiously, three of those four results saw the winner on the day keep a clean sheet and score the opening goal before half-time. Curiously, both of Southampton’s away league games this term yielded the identical 1-0 scoreline, with the only goal across those fixtures continually arriving before the 15-minute mark. The ‘clean-sheet’ remains quite significant in the context of their recent top-flight H2Hs. Indeed, four of their last six such contests have seen one or both sides fail to get on the scoresheet (W1, D1, L4).
