Celta Vigo and Villarreal go head-to-head at the Estadio de Balaídos in what promises to be a high-scoring La Liga (LL) affair. Indeed, all four of their previous top-flight H2Hs have witnessed over 3.5 goals and both teams on the scoresheet.
Although unbeaten in five consecutive league matches (W2, D3), the hosts enter this round frantically looking over their shoulders as they sit just a single point clear of 18th-placed Mallorca. Yet, Óscar García Junyent can rely upon his team’s six-game unbeaten LL home run (W2, D4) to boost Celta’s chances of beating the side they’ve managed to outplay just once in their last seven top-flight home H2Hs (D3, L3). But, the fans at the Estadio de Balaídos have had very few opportunities to enjoy high-scoring affairs this season, with just 23% (three) of Celta’s 13 LL home fixtures producing over 2.5 goals so far.
As for the visitors, they had suffered three successive losses before the coronavirus pandemic put the season on hold and are now trailing fourth-placed Real Sociedad by eight points. In turn, Villarreal’s dip in form has seen them go from three consecutive LL away victories to three straight trips without a win (D1, L2). Still, the Yellow Submarine have been an intriguing team to watch on the road this term, as 71.43% (ten) of their 14 LL away matches have seen over 2.5 goals and both sides on the scoresheet. However, Javier Calleja’s men have to be wary of their tendency to switch off after the halftime break, knowing that 67% (14) of their 21 LL away goals shipped so far came in the second half of play.
