High-flying Borussia Dortmund welcome mid-table outfit Freiburg to the Signal Iduna Park, looking to extend an impressive 17-game unbeaten run in Bundesliga (BL) H2Hs (W14, D3).
Dortmund’s flying start to the new calendar year (W5, L1) keeps them well in contention for the BL title as they trail table-toppers Bayern Munich by four points ahead of the kick-off. Notably, before beating Werder Bremen 2-0 away from home last time out, all five of Dortmund’s top-flight matches in 2020 had produced over 3.5 goals, with each seeing Lucien Favre’s side score three or more. In turn, the hosts have netted over 2.5 goals in each of their seven previous BL home outings, scoring at least two first-half goals in three of the last four. ‘Die Borussen’ couldn’t ask for a more desirable opponent to maintain their run of form than a Freiburg side they’ve beaten in nine of their past ten top-flight H2Hs held here (D1).
As for the visitors, their trip to Dortmund comes amid a severe crisis, as they’ve lost three of their last five BL fixtures (W1, D1). All three of their defeats in that period saw Freiburg draw a blank and concede two or more goals and at least once beyond the hour mark. Indeed, Freiburg’s lapses in concentration in the late stages have seen them ship one goal or more inside the final 15 minutes of play in four of 12 BL away games so far. Additionally, Christian Streich’s men have picked up just one win in their last nine BL road trips (D4, L4), with three of those four losses coming via a multiple-goal margin. Also, second-slowest away starters, Freiburg have allowed the opening goal in nine of 12 BL road matches (75%).
