Sporting Lisbon vs Liverpool 25/07/19
25 July 2019
Sporting Lisbon and Liverpool will face-off at Yankee Stadium for a friendly meeting that will see the Reds trying to bounce back after two consecutive defeats.
The Portuguese giants still chase their elusive first triumph this summer, after failing to pick up a win in their previous three summer friendlies (D1, L2). Still, none of those matches has been short of entertainment, as all of them have produced over 2.5 goals and seen both teams score. Sporting’s defensive problems lately have seen them concede at least one goal in their previous seven outings, allowing over 1.5 goals per match five times along the way. The Lions have, however, been regular on the scoresheet ever since a goalless draw with Maritimo back in February, having found the net in 16 straight games ahead of this fixture.
Although the Merseysiders have started their preparations off on the right foot, securing back-to-back wins over the English lower-league sides Tranmere Rovers and Bradford City, a sudden drop-off in form has seen them suffer back-to-back losses in the build-up to this clash. The Reds have sustained a 3-2 defeat to Borussia Dortmund before being edged out 2-1 by Sevilla. Still, all four of Liverpool’s friendlies this summer have featured over 2.5 goals with three of them seeing both teams score. Also, none of Liverpool’s last 19 games has ended in a draw (W16, L3), with Jurgen Klopp’s men scoring 2+ match goals 17 times in the process.
