Rennes vs Montpellier 29/08/20

29 August 2020

Rennes will kick-start their 2020/21 Ligue 1 home campaign against Montpellier at Roazhon Park this weekend.

The hosts started their Ligue 1 season with a 1-1 away draw with Lille but will be looking to improve when they take on a side they’ve beaten in both of their previous top-flight H2Hs. By extension, ‘Les Rennais’ have avoided defeat in all five of their last Ligue 1 H2Hs held at this venue (W3, D2), keeping a clean sheet on four of those occasions. Notably, Julien Stéphan’s men were in the midst of a purple patch, putting together three straight league triumphs, before the coronavirus outbreak curtailed the 2019/20 Ligue 1 season. Additionally, they were relentless at home turf the last term, winning nine from 14 home league fixtures (D2, L3) despite seven of those successes yielding a single-goal margin.

Meanwhile, the visitors enter the new season after producing an exciting warm-up campaign that saw three of their four friendly fixtures feature over 2.5 goals and both teams scoring (W1, D2, L2). But, the ‘clean-sheet’ theme could play a prominent role in this match-up in the context of Montpellier’s results from the final stage of the last season. Indeed, none of their closing five Ligue matches in 2019/20 ended in a stalemate (W2, L3), with each of those results (wins/losses) seeing the winner on the day keep a blank sheet. Yet, slow-starting Montpellier saw all four of their opening top-flight matches last season contain under 2.5 goals, with three producing the identical 1-0 scoreline (W1, D1, L2).
