Chile vs Peru 04/07/19
4 July 2019
Chile and Peru go head-to-head at the Arena do Grêmio in the Copa America semi-finals as the reigning holders look to post their third consecutive win over Peru in this competition.
The back-to-back Copa America winners will have a chance to break into their third successive CA final after dumping Colombia out of the competition after a penalty shootout. La Roja finished second in Group C with a record of two wins and a loss, having scored over 1.5 match goals in both triumphs while failed to hit the net in a 1-0 loss to Uruguay. But, they have now failed to find the net twice in a row, producing just five shots on target in those two games. Also, Reinaldo Rueda’s men have been struggling for consistency in 2019, having endured mixed fortunes since the turn of the year (W3, D2, L2).
Meanwhile, the Peruvians were lucky to advance to the knockout stage, having earned their place in the quarter-finals after finishing the best third-placed nation in the group phase (W1, D1, L1). Notably, Los Incas have struggled to hit the back of the net in three of four matches at the tournament, keeping a blank sheet twice in the process. Even though they’ve failed to produce a single shot on target in their quarter-final clash with Uruguay, La Blanquirroja managed to qualify for the semi-finals after beating La Celeste after a penalty shootout. Still, Ricardo Gareca’s men now face a daunting prospect to break into the CA final as they’ve suffered four defeats in their previous five H2H meetings with Chile (W1, L4).
