Bayern Munich will try to maintain their 100% start to the UEFA Champions League (CL) season when they lock horns with Tottenham Hotspur at the Allianz Arena this week.
The hosts are enjoying an outstanding European campaign, having won all five of their opening CL games. While four of Bayern’s triumphs saw them score at least three goals, all but one of their CL successes this season have come via a multiple-goal margin. Furthermore, the Bavarians have found the net in nine of ten halves of the CL football played so far. Another three points are surely on the cards, given that the reigning Bundesliga holders have won four of their previous five competitive home matches against the English visitors (W4, L1). A potential worry for Hans-Dieter Flick could be Bayern’s indifferent home form in Europe recently (W4, D2, L2), and the fact they go into this meeting on the back of a 2-1 defeat to Borussia Monchengladbach in the national championship.
The visitors have bounced back after a 7-2 hammering to Bayern in the reverse fixture, putting together three straight CL triumphs. Notably, all of those successes have seen Tottenham score at least twice in the second half and manage four or more goals in total. Under Jose Mourinho, Spurs have been unstoppable in the final third, scoring 3+ match goals in all but one of their five competitive matches with him in charge (W4, L1). However, the London giants have failed to live up to expectations on the road in Europe over the past few seasons, pulling off only four wins in their last 14 4 trips in the CL group stage.
